ABSTRACT

When I initially wrote the above reflection I assumed I was writing a personal narrative that described a journey with my son. The issues were initially what I had thought were questions in and around him and his (dis)abilities. But I am now well aware, through reflecting via post-structuralist lenses, that the issues I described were in fact more issues relating to the writer Catherine, as mother, and as someone who has been constructed as female, teacher, educator and athlete. Through employing post-structural resources, I have reflected on how a young person with motor coordination difficulties is positioned ‘differently’ and as our worlds merged, how Leo’s lived experiences and the kinds of opportunities to live his life, are in fact largely contoured by the discourses that are available to him.
