ABSTRACT

Individuals with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) can experience cognitive impairment. Both this, and the associated physical debilitation due to AIDS, can result in individuals applying for and receiving disability support. This may be through a private disability insurer, through the government, or a combination. When a private insurer is involved, there can be requests for disability evaluations, either at the time of application or after the individual has received payments for a number of years. Neuropsychological assessment, in particular, can be used as part of the disability evaluation to quantify the degree of cognitive impairment. However, as in any situation in which secondary gain is an issue, it is important to adequately assess effort and to determine whether the test results are valid.
