ABSTRACT

I fi rst discussed the translation and publication of this book, originally published in Portuguese in 1996, with Paulo Freire two years ago at his house in São Paulo. We just had fi nished one more session of conversations and interviews that I had with him-with surprising regularity, given his schedule and mine-for the last two decades . These conversations between friends were also part of a book about his life and work that I have been postponing for too long. It was a wonderful evening in the company of Paulo and Moacir Gadotti, and we shared the wonderful Brazilian aguardiente that Paulo liked so much, casasha, while we chatted in a typical, animated Latin American fashion, surrounded by Paulo’s art, books, and honoris causa diplomas.
