ABSTRACT

The primary goal of this chapter is to discuss the elements of what could be considered “good architecture,” and “good urban planning.” It begins with a discussion of relevant parameters in order to show that there is no unique pattern, since the social needs, conditions and context change not only historically but geographically. Next the International Style, with its universal character, is examined, as well as other styles developed later. Finally some issues concerning Paris’ incendiary autumn of 2005 are raised, particularly its relationship to certain entrenched architecture and urbanism practices.
