ABSTRACT

A theological analysis of the Harry Potter series can be quite a controversial endeavor, yet it is a fascinating challenge leading to interesting results. It is important to state, to begin with, that my analysis of Harry Potter is not the Christian analysis, but just a Christian one. This chapter will focus on the spiritual, religious, and moral messages in the books from the perspective of a Southern European Protestant theologian, who considers Harry Potter an outstanding children’s story and not a theological treatise. Thus, I believe it is not fair simply to judge the text, but it is appropriate to engage with it. It is important to bear in mind that, as Christians, we have very different perspectives on many subjects, even if we are united by the name of Jesus Christ, and that not even members of the same Christian denomination share the same understanding on many issues.
