ABSTRACT

Civil society is of paramount import to both democracy and sustainability. It is the foundation on which democratic governance rests and without which democracy cannot survive. Civil society has toppled governments from the Philippines and Panama to South Africa and Czechoslovakia, and it has advocated democratic governance from the United States to Estonia (Mbogori and Chigudu, 1999). Civil society, moreover, transcends nationstates and geographic borders to converge internationally as a force for democracy and sustainability.
