Los Espiritus Siguen Hablando: Chicana Spiritualities

WithLARA MEDINA

The spiritual practices of many Chicanas emerge from a purposeful integration of their creative inner resources and the diverse cultural influences that feed their souls and their psyches. Accepting their estrangement from Christianity, many Chicanas return to an Indígena-(indigenous-) inspired spirituality, learn to trust their own senses and bodies, look to non-Western philosophies, and re-create traditional and new cultural practices, all of which offers them a (re)connection to their selves, their spirits, and to the ongoing process of creating nuestra cultura (our culture). As they journey on paths previously prohibited by patriarchal religions, Chicanas redefine and decide for themselves what images, rituals, myths, and deities nourish and give expression to their deepest values.
