ABSTRACT

This chapter provides practice protocols and specific guidelines for scoring Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) stories on the following variables that are theoretically and empirically linked to empathy: (1) perceptual integration (PI) (four levels); (2) source of affect (SA) (external/descriptive or internal); and (3) mutuality of autonomy (MA) (five levels) (Teglasi, 1993, 2001; also see chapter 30 in this volume). The stories presented for practice were told by children who participated in a study of empathy (Locraft & Teglasi, 1997), and, as detailed in chapter 30, the scoring was reliable and distinguished between the groups. The TAT scores were more clearly associated with empathy than with grade level, which ranged from kindergarten through sixth grade.
