“The DVD of Attractions?” The Lion King and the Digital

WithTheme Park TOM BROWN

Understanding “new media” in the light of the “old” provides something of an antidote to the hyperbole of modern multi-media institutions, which seek to frame innovations such as the DVD in terms of unprecedented access to the previously mystifi ed workings of media production. In the case of this entry, I draw upon the paradigm of Tom Gunning’s “cinema of attractions” (1990[1986]). The question mark in the title indicates the evident tension between the use of a concept originating in the study of early cinema and my subsequent analysis of conventions (relatively) specifi c to the new media object DVD.
