ABSTRACT

Accident, adapted from the novel by Nicholas Mosley, directed by Joseph Losey, is set at Oxford among philosophy professors, Stephen and Charley, vying for the favors of Anna, Stephen’s student William’s girlfriend. Stephen is disenchanted with his pregnant wife, Rosiland, his social circle, and even his former lover, Francesca. All seems dull, constrained, exhausted, as he becomes infatuated, even obsessed with Anna, a student who is seduced by his colleague and friend Charley. In the end (and in the opening sequence) William is killed in an accident from which Anna escapes, only to have to escape Stephen’s desperate, clumsy, ineffectual attempt to seduce her.
