ABSTRACT
A significant portion of the carbohydrates that are produced daily in photosynthesis are respired in the roots. The magnitude varies with age of the plants, growth conditions, and the species under investigation. The rate of root respiration, measured as O2 consumption or CO2 release, also varies between species, even when plants are grown under very similar conditions. This chapter discusses factors that are responsible for the differences in root respiration.
