ABSTRACT

Unlike the situation in other sensory modalities, the field of human olfactory electrophysiology is rather poorly developed. For example, in vision, recordings of electroretinograms (ERG) or of visual event-related potentials (VERP) are routinely used diagnostically, in contrast to the situation in olfaction, where analogous potentials are rarely measured, even in university medical centers. However, as noted in this chapter, a number of laboratories are working in this field and have generated an impressive number of publications and a body of useful information for better understanding elements of the human olfactory process.
