Research and community organizing as tools for democratizing educational policymaking

WithJEANNIE OAKES, MICHELLE RENÉE, JOHN ROGERS, MARTIN LIPTON

Education reforms have failed to disrupt persistent schooling inequalities that disadvantage the nation’s low-income students and students of color. In this chapter, we argue for processes by which members of low-income communities of color defi ne education problems, develop solutions, and press for action. We also argue that these groups and processes require research capacity that is responsive to their needs.
