Working towards and beyond collaborative resource management: Parks, people, and participation in the Peruvian Amazon

ByMICHAEL C. GAVIN, ALAKA WALI, MIGUEL VASQUEZ

We believe participatory approaches to conservation action can help communities and interested external agents overcome some of the barriers to successful collaborative or community-based resource management. In this chapter we outline our work with communities neighbouring the Cordillera Azul National Park in Peru. The participatory work we have been a part of in the region has sought to gather vital data about resource use to inform the Park’s management plan, as well as to empower communities and build local capacity to engage in collaborative resource management.
