ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an introduction to and overview of Gothic film parodies. Given the brevity of the chapter and the breadth of the subject, the overview is limited to film parodies of the Gothic triptych: Frankenstein, Dracula and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Although definitions of and critical approaches to ‘Gothic’, ‘parody’ and ‘film’ have undergone significant changes in the past 35 years, the overview considers both traditional formal and recent theoretical approaches. The chapter ends with a discussion of contemporary theoretical intersections between Gothic, film and parody and some ways in which Gothic film parodies inform contemporary critical uses of the Gothic.
