Sultan Khan: Globalizing Heritage
Sultan Khan is a thoroughly traditional sarangi player who has become an international touring star; the world is his oyster. He is as comfortable in London and Edmonton as he is in Sikhar and Bombay. At the same time, he remains an unabashed hereditary musician from India. An open, pragmatic individual who loves enjoying life in company, Sultan Khan embraces the present but is firmly grounded in his inherited professional musical identity. His career and personality encompass both respect for this inheritance and openness to new ways. As a musician, however, Sultan Khan remains attached to the classical tradition, to which he brings a special musical flavor from his region, the northwestern desert state of Rajasthan. The regional touch is heard most poignantly in the Rajasthani folk songs he likes to add to his classical performances.
