Groom Lake and the Imperial Production of Nowhere

Of all the places in the Nellis Range, Groom Lake is probably the most famous, but in a paradoxical kind of way: in popular culture, “Area 51” is famous for the fact that it does not “ocially” exist. Publicly available satellite images and photographers with telephoto lenses speak to its presence, but the Air Force refused to acknowledge the base for many years. More recently, they have begrudgingly conrmed the presence of an “operating location near Groom Lake,” but nothing more.
