LEARNING THE BUSINESS
Korea in the early 1900s was a feudal society based on Confucian prin-ciples and occupied by Japan. While the Japanese military governed all important political and economic aspects of life, Confucian tradi-tions played a major role in village life, as well as in Chung lu Yung's subsequent life in the business world. As Chung would later observe, "The Confucian spirit is my management philosophy."2 In fact, throughout his life Chung credited his parents with instilling in him a commitment to diligence and hard work. When he began his company, he would carry these principles with him.
