Rough Boys: The Gangsters of Martin Scorsese and

ByMichael Cimino

Both Martin Scorsese and Michael Cimino stay close to personal encounters and historical subjects in their attempts to realize the gangster through their films. Both filmmakers also reflect period notions of “tough guy” masculinities in their male characterizations, proving that although the gangsters they portray may contain clues about masculinity, they are mired in stage two of the development of the gangster figure-appropriation. They have not yet realized how to be wise men.
