The best way to describe Carol is that she seemed “not there.” Her body was present, at least the way an inanimate object might be visible, but she seemed to be empty inside. She stood at the entrance to the office, frozen, immobile, and was led in by the receptionist. Her face was totally blank, and her eyes stared off toward some indeterminate place in the distance.
