JON CARLSON: Self-Surgery to Remove the Transponder
Pages 11

Jon Carlson believes that doing therapy is a lot like being in an X-ray room; everyone is affected by the energy circulating in the air. Just as clients are affected by the therapist’s compassion, faith, and interventions, so therapists are impacted (for better and for worse) by the client’s behavior, feelings, and reactions. That is one reason why there is attention in training to guard against these supposedly negative counter-transference feelings. Therapists are thus taught the importance of maintaining self-control, objectivity, detachment, and psychological (and physical) distance from clients.
