ABSTRACT

Much energy and research to date has been focused on finding, tagging and storing chunks of educational content, referred to as learning objects (LOs). The prime objective of this effort is to enable searching, retrieval and reuse of learning resources by teachers and instructional designers. However, it is somewhat ironic that despite all the effort to define standards and specifications for creating and packaging parts of the educational process such as sequencing LOs, defining objectives and standardizing question formats, there has been only very preliminary work on specifying how to formally describe the complete educational process itself. It is as if we have established means and techniques to identify and measure the ingredients, but have yet to figure out how to combine the ingredients to bake the cake!
