The use of ICTs in the workplace: Opening the black box


Measured in this way, computer use has not only ceased to be a real variable but, even more importantly, a wide range of different tasks and activities are obscured by such a crude indicator of computer use. Indeed, there is a huge difference between a checkout worker in a supermarket using an advanced scanner/terminal, a white-collar worker in a bank or office using a PC for word processing and the Internet, and a high-tech consultant involved with ICT applications: yet they all use a computer!
