Long-term security concerns must include the environmental health of postconflict regions. This is often considered a secondary issue, one that will receive increased attention as political and economic development proceeds. However, there are several reasons why the ecological condition of a post-conflict area is, on the contrary, of principal concern, including the limitations presented by damaged ecosystems, the health threats posed by environmental harm, and the prospect that cooperation towards environmental policymaking can act as a platform for further conciliatory efforts.
