Durability of concretes mixed with seawater

Mixing concrete with sea water is discouraged by building codes such as American Concrete Institute 318 (1983) and British Standard 3148 (1980) due to the increased risk of reinforcing steel corrosion and possible long term strength losses. However, severe water shortages in arid regions along sea shores can make sea water a serious alternative for mixing concrete. It is also well known that the risks can be minimized by using the proper cement and admixture as well as by following good concrete making practices.
