THE EFFECT OF SILICA FUME TO REDUCE EXPANSION DUE TO ALKALI-SILICA REACTION IN CONCRETE

One of the methods of reducing the risk of alkali-silica reaction (ASR) in concrete is using partial replacement of Portland cement with pozzolanic or similar cementitious material. Silica fume (SF) has a high relative surface area with an average particle size of less than 0.1 µm. These properties give SF a high activity and offer the potential of using a lower cement replacement (5-15% by weight of cement) compared with >25% for pfa (BRE Digest 330, (1988)).
