Cathodic protection has been used on steel structures for many years but its application to reinforced concrete is a comparatively recent innovation. Doubts prevail as
to whether it really works and, if so, how effective the treatment is. It has been suggested that the costs of installation and maintenance are prohibitive and that the exercise becomes unrealistic when applied to complete buildings.
