DURABILITY OF AERATED LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE PANELS WITH SURFACE COATING SYSTEMS

Production of aerated lightweight concrete (ALC) panels in Japan had been started on the basis of technology translation from European countries and they have come to be widely applied as various building components, the total amount of production reaching some 300 million square metres at present, a figure which will increase in coming years. Research into the durability of ALC products themselves had been carried out [1] [2] and it had been recognized that their protective coating systems played an important role. Since 1974, the Building Research Institute (BRI) has been conducting outdoor exposure tests aimed at evaluating the overall durability characteristics of ALC panel wall systems with various protective systems as well as the sealing materials for panel joints.
