Women in struggle: A case study in a Kent mining community

ByAvril Leonard

The prominent role of Aylesham women activists in the 1984-5 miners’ strike is the focal point of this chapter, which examines the impact of that struggle on their class and gender consciousness. A case study of working class women in struggle is of central importance to theoretical debates about relationships of class and gender in contemporary feminism. In drawing attention to the complexities and contradictions inherent in the lives of working class women by virtue of their, at times, conflicting loyalties to their class and gender, it is possible to contribute to an understanding of the mechanics and resolution of this dilemma.
