ABSTRACT
This chapter is intended to be an introduction to the topics that are considered in more detail in the individual chapters of this book and Aspects of Memory: The Practical Aspects. The philosophy of the two books is to allow experts in the leading areas of memory research to explain the theoretical and practical issues that are currently exciting the most interest. However, so that the student can see these chapters in context, it will help if we explain how these current research interests have come about within the development of memory research.
