ABSTRACT
The subject of this paper is the changed relationship between the maternity services and fathers (or expectant fathers). The underlying hypothesis is that the maternity services now provide fathers with a context of opportunities in which to behave in ways which may be linked to the phenomenon of the couvade. In turn, this suggests that midwives have become, in part, ‘mid-husbands’ too.
