ABSTRACT
This chapter considers the origins and development of the modern hospice movement. This began as an ‘unashamedly reformist’ movement1 outside the formal structure of the NHS. Its development, generally accepted as a considerable success story, has seen it both expanding and moving into the mainstream of service provision.
