ABSTRACT

This chapter will be concerned with exploring the problems and possibilities in making links between the biological and social determinants of health. Rather than posing these as separate and alternative ontological positions, it will be argued that there is a need to understand the interdependence of the biological and social as part of both a causative and cultural order. Furthermore, the way health is experienced, e.g. by different ethnic groups, requires a rethinking of how communication is determinative of our symbolic social life-world.
