Citizenship, family policy and women’s patterns of employment

In order to understand gender differences in citizenship rights and employment patterns in modern welfare state systems the complex relationship between work, care and welfare provision has to be taken into consideration. The risk of mothers in losing their labour market position and consequently their independent income when caring for a child is closely connected to the relationship between labour market organization, family structures and welfare state institutions. And this risk takes different forms depending on the family policy pursued in the individual welfare states.
