Feminist perspectives on democratisation in the South: engendering or adding women in?: Donna Pankhurst and Jenny Pearce

This chapter is concerned with the danger of over-prioritising gender as a social category by which women are politically marginalised in the political transformations taking place in Latin America (LA) and sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Recent academic attention to the role of women in Third World politics is an important correction to past neglect. This chapter argues, however, that women cannot simply be ‘added in’ to analyses of contemporary political change. The risk exists where the nature of democratisation is oversimplified and where otherwise useful analyses of the limits of democracy in Western Europe are imposed.1
