ABSTRACT

Recently, in education in England and Wales, there has been great emphasis on the importance of developing pupils’ literacy skills in order to raise achievement. Within science education, the issue of language and learning has been discussed for a considerable period of time, and developing literacy skills has been part of this discussion. The 1999 draft revision of the Science National Curriculum has taken on the importance of language by incorporating communication into AT1. This may give added impetus to teachers addressing issues of language and literacy development through and within science (QCA 1999a).
