ABSTRACT

It is raining outside. The Y5 class is engaged on a task to build an electric circuit using wires, bulb and battery. There are questions to answer about what happens when the wire is connected or disconnected, drawings to make of the circuit. One girl is sitting alone looking out of the window – bored. She has, typically, finished all the tasks well before the rest of the class. An extra task is needed to occupy her. The teacher has identified the girl as a more able pupil, so he sits with her talking about the circuit and then asks her to imagine she is so small she can see inside the wire: ‘Describe what you would see.’
