Horrific films and 1930s British cinema

The horror film was established in the American cinema of the 1930s. The monster movies of this period, most notably the productions of Universal, have since become regarded as representing the genre’s golden age. In contrast, British horror cinema is often absent from the historical discourse of 1930s film, and it is not until the productions of companies such as Hammer in the late 1950s that it is acknowledged genuinely to exist.
