ABSTRACT

The Stephen Lawrence case has touched us all deeply. Institutionalised racism has finally been recognised, a direct consequence of the outstanding work undertaken by the family and supporters of Stephen Lawrence and Duwayne Brooks. But that victory in turn was built on fifty years or so of tireless campaigning against street level and institutional racism in Britain. The black presence in Britain has recently been celebrated in public spheres, noticeably through the anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush and the fiftieth anniversary of Indian independence. Sadly, those celebrations have not been about the end of racism in Britain.
