ABSTRACT

There are many wireless technologies in use today. Each offers cost-performance tradeoffs and is suited to specific applications.

SMR Technology

Introduced in 1970, specialized mobile radio (SMR) was the first commercially successful wireless technology. The traditional SMR technology employs analog transmission and a single-site, high-powered transmitter configuration that precludes the use of any given RF by more than one caller at a time within a given service area. These constraints have caused traditional SMR operators to emphasize radio dispatch service, which involves limited-distance communications and places less demand on system capacity. Users of radio dispatch services include contractors, service companies, and delivery services that have significant field operations and need to provide their personnel with the ability to communicate directly with one another, either on a one-to-one or one-to-many basis.
