ABSTRACT

Although the internal and external benefits of Web-enabled data warehouses are appealing, they do not come without complicating issues. In traditional implementations, data warehouses have been used by a small population of either highly trained or high-ranking employees for decision support. With such a small number of users having the warehouse application on their desktop, access control was straightforward: either users could access a given table or they could not. Once the warehouse is to be entered by more people — possibly including some outside of the company — access may need to be restricted based on content. Security concerns also change as the user population increases, with encryption over the public Internet becoming one likely requirement.
