ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the shifting composition of the student body of the school from its inception in 1881 to the present. From an all-Jewish school, today the school has predominantly Muslim students. This is not exceptional in the context of urban Calcutta. The school continues to provide a quality education, a testimony to the community’s commitment to continue this educational service for the benefit of students, regardless of their religious or class affiliation. The education provided by, and in the name of, the Jewish community testifies to the persistence of an ethos of multiculturalism. The continuing close ties between Muslims and Jews is important to celebrate, especially for those who choose to see Jewish and Muslim interests as antithetical.
