ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the development of electronic conveyancing in Ireland to date. It identifies the progress made by examining the role played by the key players in the Irish conveyancing system. A central hub model of eConveyancing was first recommended by the Irish Law Reform Commission (LRC) in 2005 as the appropriate model for Ireland. Since that time, Ireland has struggled at both a conceptual and a practical level with the introduction of such a system. During that time, the Irish Property Registration Authority has modernised and digitised its title registration system and made significant progress towards developing a system of eRegistration. The Law Society of Ireland has taken up the mantle from the LRC to progress the development of this eConveyancing model and is currently working on the digital signatures aspect of electronic conveyancing. Given the experience to date, the chapter concludes with some key questions about the current status of electronic conveyancing in Ireland.
