Recent engineering research and design in marine environment are focused on lifecycle cost, durability design and infrastructure management techniques. These areas encompass a wide range of technologies and activities related to both the more effective design of new structures and the rehabilitation of existing structures. The first task can be obtained in particular with the use of new materials to create innovative designs with improved durability. By the way, both purposes can be achieved by developing intelligent sensing systems and appropriate techniques for monitoring these new or rehabilitated structures.
