High strength lightweight aggregate concrete

ByT A Holm, T W Bremner

It may be argued that the first practical use of high strength concrete took place in World War I when the American Emergency Fleet Corporation built lightweight concrete ships with specified compressive strengths of 5000 psi when commercial normal weight concrete strengths of that time were 2000 psi. It was fully recognized by these forward looking engineers that high self-weight was the major impediment in the use of structural concrete.
