Monitoring the environment involves measuring its properties. A significant change discernible from a background of meaningless variation of those properties identifies some process. The goal of environmental data analysis is to discover patterns which can be interpreted properly for some environmental process or phenomenon. This approach can be extended to the analysis of remotely sensed data, the goal of which is mainly die accurate discovery of the environmental properties captured by the sensor, like biomass quantity, or land cover.
