Semantic Modelling for Oceanographic Data

Pages 14

The traditional home of die geographical information system (GIS) in terms of managing, mapping and modelling spatial data and associated attributes, as well as spatial decision-making, has been in the land-based sciences and professions. However, within the past decade researchers have noted that the GIS and related technologies will become increasingly important in support of oceanographic and atmospheric research, particularly in the context of monitoring global change (see Goodchild, Chapter 21, this volume). This chapter describes research in collaboration with the Vents Program at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) in Newport, Oregon, USA.
