The human ability to experience space directly plays a fundamental role in cognition (Mark and Frank, 1996): experientialists assume that humans build their basic concepts according to their spatial experience (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980; Johnson, 1987). To do so they use abstraction mechanisms which allow those details that are necessary for a particular spatial task to be chosen (Frank, 1990). Hierarchization is such an abstraction mechanism.
