Christ versus the Llama sacrifice

Rodolfo Kusch’s theological criticism of the colonization of Latin America
WithPéter Szakács

The Argentinian intellectual Rodolfo Kusch (1922–1979) was one of the founders of the philosophy of liberation. He is famous for having visited the Andean villages, in order to find an authentically indigenous understanding of the meaning of existence. This paper presents his political theology, according to which the main objective of religion is to offer some kind of spiritual salvation against the irrational and tragical aspects of life. On that basis Kusch argues that Andean aboriginal religion is not inferior to Christianity, and that Christianity has been subservient to European powers as they colonized South America.
