ABSTRACT

From the beginning, journalism has been an activity able to adapt itself to numerous and diverse kind of changes, even to the technological ones. Nevertheless, these transformations occurred during the last few years have been more profound and larger than the previous ones due to the development of new tools like mobile phones or the Internet and, especially, their integration in the journalistic production processes. This chapter is dedicated to the sphere of mobile devices and their evolution throughout the last years, where they have become not just multi-purpose machines for communication, but have most importantly provided new tools and contents for a society that is more connected than ever before. Professor Alba Silva commences by describing the evolution of mobiles as technological devices and enablers for communication. Professor Deborah S. Chung then explores the possibilities of citizen journalism and participation through the use of mobile devices. Finally, researchers Juanjo Lainez-Reche and Martín Vaz-Álvarez close the chapter by depicting the latest trends in the adaptation of content for mobile devices through the example of British and Australian media.
